About Old Town

The Medieval City of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, is the historic core of the Greek island's capital. Enclosed by 4 kilometers of imposing fortifications built by the Knights of St. John, it is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns. The district is divided into the northern Collachium, home to the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights, and the southern Hora, with its Ottoman-era mosques and markets.

Visitors enter through one of eleven gates, like the Liberty Gate near the commercial harbor. The Palace of the Grand Master, reconstructed in the 1930s, now operates as a museum. The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in the former Hospital of the Knights on Museum Square. The main shopping street, Sokratous, leads down to the 14th-century Mosque of Suleiman.
