About Eleuthera Island
Eleuthera Island: Atlantic Sliver of the Central Bahamas
Eleuthera stretches 180 km from north to south but rarely exceeds 2 km in width, making it one of the narrowest inhabited islands in the world. English Eleutheran Adventurers established the Bahamas' first permanent colony here in 1648. The Glass Window Bridge in Gregory Town divides the deep-blue Atlantic from the turquoise Caribbean — the colour contrast is visible from the roadside. A short water taxi from the north tip reaches Harbour Island and its Pink Sands Beach, a 5 km stretch of rose-coloured shoreline.
Where to Stay
Accommodation concentrates in three areas: Governor's Harbour at the island's midpoint, Harbour Island (10 minutes by water taxi from North Eleuthera dock), and the quieter south near Rock Sound. Properties are mostly boutique hotels and guesthouses; no large all-inclusive resorts operate here. North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) and Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB) both receive direct flights from Nassau and Miami.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Nassau flights take 25 minutes; water taxis to Harbour Island run every 30 minutes.
- Season: Mid-November to mid-April is dry; hurricane season runs June through November.
- Transport: Rent a car — no public bus service runs the length of the island.
