About Brunei-Muara

Brunei-Muara: Capital District on Borneo's North Coast

Brunei-Muara is the smallest yet most populous of Brunei's four districts, covering roughly 570 km² on the northern tip of Borneo. It contains Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), the national capital, and draws visitors with a combination of Islamic architecture, royal heritage, and one of Southeast Asia's largest inhabited water settlements. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, completed in 1958 and rising 52 metres above a ceremonial lagoon, anchors the capital skyline. Kampong Ayer, a cluster of 42 villages built on stilts over the Brunei River, houses around 13,000 residents and has existed in its current form for over 1,000 years.

Where to Stay in Brunei-Muara

Most hotels concentrate within BSB's central grid, within walking distance of Jalan Sultan and the Royal Regalia Museum. Properties range from mid-range business hotels to a handful of 5-star options near the waterfront. The Gadong commercial district, roughly 4 km west of the mosque, offers additional accommodation and the territory's largest night market.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Brunei International Airport sits 8 km from BSB city centre; taxis take about 15 minutes.
  • Currency: Brunei Dollar (BND) is pegged 1:1 with the Singapore Dollar.
  • Dress code: Modest clothing is expected at mosques and government buildings.
  • Alcohol: Not sold publicly — visitors may bring limited quantities through customs.
