Borjomi: Mineral Springs in the Lesser Caucasus

Borjomi sits in a narrow gorge carved by the Mtkvari River, roughly 150 km southwest of Tbilisi in Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The town built its reputation on carbonated mineral water — bottled here since the 1890s and exported across the former Soviet Union. The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest protected areas in the Caucasus at over 85,000 hectares, begins at the edge of town and offers marked trails through dense conifer forest toward alpine meadows above 2,600 m.

Where to Stay

Most hotels line the central promenade near Borjomi Central Park, where a free mineral-water spring flows from an ornate pavilion. Guesthouses cluster along the lower gorge; larger spa hotels occupy hillside positions above the river. The town is compact — walking between the park, the spring pavilion, and the bazaar takes under 20 minutes.

• Getting there: Marshrutkas run from Tbilisi's Didube terminal (roughly 3 hours); trains connect via Khashuri.
• Season: July–August brings peak domestic tourism; May–June offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
• Park access: Register at the National Park visitor centre on the main street before entering marked trails.
• Altitude: Town elevation is approximately 800 m — pack a layer for evenings even in summer.
