About Venetian Harbor

The Venetian Harbor is the historic core of Chania on Crete. It was built by the Republic of Venice in the 14th century, primarily for maritime defense and trade. Its defining features are the stone harbor walls, the Egyptian Lighthouse, and the 16th-century Firkas Fortress, which now houses the Maritime Museum. The district is a pedestrian-friendly maze of old Venetian arsenals, Ottoman-era buildings, and waterfront cafes.

You can walk the entire harbor perimeter in under 30 minutes. The area is central to the city's Old Town, situated directly west of the Nea Chora beach district. Key landmarks include the Mosque of the Janissaries and the Grand Arsenal, a restored cultural venue.
