Lefkada: Ionian Island at the End of a Causeway

Lefkada is the only Ionian island connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and a swing bridge, making it drivable year-round without a ferry. The island covers 303 km² and sits roughly 330 km northwest of Athens. Its west coast holds some of the most photographed beaches in Greece — Porto Katsiki and Egremni are reached by steep cliff stairs and face open Ionian Sea. The island interior rises to 1,158 m at Stavrota peak, crossed by roads linking mountain villages like Karya, known for its embroidery craft tradition dating to the 19th century.

Where to Stay in Lefkada

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster in Lefkada Town on the northeast tip, around the Santa Maura fortress built by the Orsini family in 1300. The resort strip of Nydri on the east coast faces the islets of Meganisi and Skorpios. Vasiliki in the south is a dedicated windsurfing hub, regularly hosting international competitions thanks to afternoon thermal winds funneling down the bay.

• Access: Drive from Athens via Antirrio–Rio bridge (approx. 4.5 hours) or fly into Aktion Airport (PVK), 20 km north.
• Best conditions: Windsurfers target July–August thermals; beach visitors often prefer late May or September for smaller crowds.
