About Rhodes Town
Rhodes Town: Medieval Walls, Aegean Light, and Knight-Built Streets
Rhodes Town, on the northern tip of Rhodes island in the Dodecanese, holds one of Europe's most intact medieval city centres — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The Old Town is encircled by 4 km of fortified walls built by the Knights of St. John after 1309. Inside, the Street of the Knights (Ippoton) runs straight from the harbour gate to the Palace of the Grand Master, a 14th-century fortress restored in the 1930s. The New Town (Neohori), north of the walls, borders three harbours: Mandraki, Akandia, and the commercial port.
Where to Stay in Rhodes Town
Hotels cluster in three zones. The Old Town offers boutique properties inside medieval buildings, steps from the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes on Plateia Argyrokastrou. The Elli Beach strip in Neohori attracts larger resort-style hotels; the beach runs roughly 600 m along the northwest coast. A third option is the Monte Smith hill area, 2 km southwest, with quieter stays and views over the Aegean toward Turkey, visible on clear days at roughly 18 km.
