About Conakry

Conakry: Atlantic Peninsula Capital of Guinea

Conakry sits on the Kaloum Peninsula, a narrow finger of land jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of West Africa's few fully sea-bordered capital cities. Founded as a French colonial port in 1887, the city grew around the deep-water harbour that still handles Guinea's bauxite exports — the country holds roughly half the world's proven bauxite reserves. The Kaloum district retains French-era administrative buildings alongside the Grand Mosque of Conakry, one of the largest mosques in West Africa, completed in 1982 with Saudi funding.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels concentrate in Kaloum (the business core), Dixinn near the university, and Ratoma to the north, where newer guesthouses and mid-range properties serve NGO workers and regional business travellers. The Corniche Sud coastal road links most hotel zones to the airport, Gbessia International, located about 15 km northeast of Kaloum. Traffic on the single peninsula road is heavy during peak hours; allow 45–60 minutes for airport transfers.

Practical Tips

  • Currency: Guinean Franc (GNF); USD and euros exchange at hotels and licensed bureaux in Kaloum.
  • Climate: Dry season runs November to April — the preferred travel window.
  • Language: French is the official language; Susu and Pular widely spoken.
  • Connectivity: SIM cards from Orange Guinea or MTN available at the airport on arrival.
