About Brescia
Brescia: Roman Ruins and Renaissance Squares in Lombardy
Brescia, the second-largest city in Lombardy, sits at the foot of the Prealps 90 km east of Milan. The Capitolium, a Roman temple dating to 73 AD, anchors the northern edge of the ancient forum alongside one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in northern Italy. In 2011, UNESCO designated Brescia's Monastero di Santa Giulia and the Roman remains a joint World Heritage Site — the city shares that status with Bergamo and Cividale del Friuli under the collective inscription Longobards in Italy.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster around Piazza della Loggia, the 15th-century civic square, and along Via Beccaria within walking distance of the railway station. Brescia Centrale station connects to Milan Porta Garibaldi in 50–60 minutes by Frecciabianca, making the city a practical base for day trips across Lombardy. The metro (Metropolitana di Brescia, Line 1) runs east–west from Prealpino to S. Eufemia-Buffalora and stops beneath the historic centre.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trains from Milan run every 30 minutes; Brescia Airport (Gabriele D'Annunzio, 20 km east) handles Ryanair routes.
- Museums: The Museo di Santa Giulia covers 3,000 years of city history across the former Benedictine convent — allow at least two hours.
- Lake Garda access: Desenzano del Garda is 25 km south; ferries to Sirmione run from the pier there.
