About Caorle

Caorle

Caorle is a medieval fishing town on the Adriatic coast of Veneto, roughly 50 kilometres northeast of Venice. Its old town sits on a compact peninsula between the open sea and a brackish lagoon, with narrow lanes lined by painted houses in terracotta, ochre, and sea-blue. The cylindrical Romanesque bell tower of the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, built in the 11th century, rises above the rooftops as the clearest point of orientation in the skyline.

Visitors fall into two broad groups: Italian and Central European families drawn to the long sandy beaches of Levante and Ponente, and travellers seeking the quieter character of the historic centre away from resort infrastructure. German and Austrian tourists have summered here since the 1960s, and the town has a well-practised hospitality network despite its modest scale. The lagoon side attracts birdwatchers and anglers; local boats still bring in sea bass and grey mullet each morning from the waters of the Valle Altanea fishing valley.

Caorle's rail station closed decades ago. The nearest train connection is Portogruaro, approximately 15 kilometres inland, with regular bus services covering the gap. Venice Marco Polo Airport, around 55 kilometres to the southwest, is the most practical arrival point for international travellers. Most hotels concentrate along the beachfront promenades or within a short walk of the historic centre.
