Lake Como sits in the Lombardy foothills 50 km north of Milan, shaped like an inverted Y with 170 km of shoreline. Hotels cluster around three distinct zones: the Como city waterfront, a 10-minute walk from the train station with direct rail links to Milan Centrale (1 hour); the Bellagio promontory, reachable by ferry and known for narrow stone lanes rising from the dock; and the quieter Menaggio–Tremezzo corridor on the western shore, where 19th-century grand hotels face the Alps. Car-free ferry hops connect all three in under 40 minutes.

• Getting there: Trains run hourly from Milan Centrale to Como San Giovanni (approx. 1 hr).
• Ferries: Fast hydrofoils link Como, Bellagio, and Varenna; slower car ferries cross between Cadenabbia and Bellagio in 15 minutes.
• Season: April–October sees peak crowds; shoulder months (April, October) offer lower hotel rates and open gardens.
• Crowds: Bellagio pedestrian lanes fill by 10 a.m. in July–August — arrive before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
