About Porta Nuova

Porta Nuova: Milan's Modern Skyline District

Porta Nuova is Milan's most ambitious urban regeneration project, transforming a formerly underused area between Piazza Gae Aulenti and Corso Como into a sleek, contemporary district that stands in striking contrast to the city's historic core. With bold architecture, pedestrian-friendly plazas, and a mix of business and leisure, it offers a compelling portrait of 21st-century Milan.

Architecture and Landmarks

The district is best known for the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest), a pair of residential towers designed by architect Stefano Boeri and completed in 2014. The towers are covered with over 900 trees and thousands of shrubs and plants, making them one of the most photographed buildings in contemporary Italy. Piazza Gae Aulenti, a raised circular plaza at the heart of the district, is surrounded by glass towers and serves as a popular gathering spot for both residents and visitors. The UniCredit Tower, the tallest skyscraper in Italy at approximately 231 metres, anchors the skyline and gives the area its distinctive silhouette.

Culture, Shopping, and Dining

Porta Nuova blends corporate energy with a relaxed street-level atmosphere. The area around Corso Como is home to concept stores, design boutiques, and a lively café culture. The nearby Brera neighbourhood adds an artistic dimension, with independent galleries and artisan workshops within easy walking distance. Green spaces such as Biblioteca degli Alberi, a public botanical park opened in 2018, provide a welcome respite and host outdoor events throughout the year.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Milano Centrale Station is close by, and the district is well served by metro lines 2 and 5 (Garibaldi and Porta Nuova stops).
  • Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures for exploring the outdoor plazas and parks.
  • Nearby attractions: The Duomo di Milano, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and La Scala opera house are all reachable within 15–20 minutes on foot or by metro.
  • Dining: The area has a strong selection of all-day cafés and modern Italian restaurants, particularly around Piazza Gae Aulenti and Corso Como.
  • Photography: The Bosco Verticale is best photographed from street level in the morning, when light hits the building's western facade.
