About Pantheon

Standing at the heart of Rome's historic center, the Pantheon is one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in the world. Originally built as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome, it has stood for nearly 2,000 years — a remarkable feat of Roman engineering and architectural ambition.

A Temple Built to Last

The Pantheon was commissioned by Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD, replacing an earlier structure built by Marcus Agrippa. Its defining feature is the massive concrete dome, which measures 43.3 meters in diameter — the same as its interior height. At the apex of the dome sits the oculus, a circular opening 8.7 meters wide that allows natural light and, occasionally, rain to enter. A drainage system beneath the marble floor handles the rainwater. The dome remained the largest in the world for over 1,300 years.

From Pagan Temple to Christian Church

In 609 AD, the Byzantine Emperor Phocas gifted the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated it as a Christian church. This conversion is widely credited with preserving the structure through the medieval period. Today, the building serves as the burial site of the Renaissance artist Raphael and two Italian kings, Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.
