About Atami

Atami: Sagami Bay Onsen Gateway

Atami sits on the western shore of Sagami Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, roughly 100 km southwest of Tokyo. The city built its reputation on hot spring bathing — the name literally means "hot sea" — and its ryokan-lined hillsides have drawn urban visitors since the Meiji era. The MOA Museum of Art, perched 250 metres above sea level, holds a nationally ranked collection including Ogata Kōrin's Red and White Plum Blossoms, a Japanese National Treasure. Below, the narrow streets of the Ginza-dōri arcade connect the station to the seafront.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters in two zones: hillside onsen ryokan with private baths overlooking the bay, and compact business hotels within three minutes of Atami Station. The station sits on the JR Tōkaidō Main Line and Shinkansen Kodama services; the fastest trains from Tokyo reach Atami in 45 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Take the Kodama Shinkansen from Tokyo Station — journey time 45 minutes.
  • Best season: Late January brings the Atami Plum Festival at Akao Herb & Rose Garden; summer weekends are crowded.
  • Ryokan etiquette: Book kaiseki dinner with the room at least two weeks ahead for peak dates.
  • Day trips: Izu Peninsula towns such as Ito and Shuzenji are under 40 minutes by local train.
