About Fukuoka

Stay in Tenjin for central shopping and subway access, Hakata for the shinkansen hub and ramen stalls, Ohori Park area for a calmer residential feel near the lake, or Nakasu if proximity to the island's nightlife and riverside yatai food stalls matters. Most visitors stay two to three nights; Fukuoka Airport sits just 5 minutes from Hakata Station by subway — the shortest airport-to-centre connection in Japan.

Where to Stay in Fukuoka's Key Districts

Hakata anchors the east side of the city around Hakata Station, the terminus for Nozomi shinkansen from Tokyo (5 hours) and Osaka (75 minutes). Hotels here suit transit-focused travellers and business guests. Tenjin, 10 minutes west by subway, is Fukuoka's commercial core — department stores, underground shopping arcades, and the Nishitetsu bus terminal. Nakasu, the narrow island between the Naka and Hakata rivers, hosts the city's famous yatai open-air stalls (roughly 150 remain, down from 400 in the 1990s). Ohori Park, 2 km west of Tenjin, offers quieter streets near a 40-hectare lake and Fukuoka Castle ruins dating to 1607.

Getting Around

Fukuoka's two subway lines — Kūkō Line and Hakozaki Line — connect the airport, Hakata, and Tenjin within 20 minutes end to end. Day passes cost ¥620 (2024 rate). Nishitetsu buses cover outer districts. Cycling is practical along the Naka River embankment.

Practical Tips

  • Ramen: Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen originated here; Shin-Shin and Ichiran both have flagship counters near Hakata Station.
  • Yatai hours: Stalls open roughly 18:00–01:00; arrive before 20:00 for a seat without a wait.
  • Day trips: Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine is 25 minutes by Nishitetsu train; Yanagawa canal town is 40 minutes.
  • Weather: June–July brings heavy rain; pack accordingly for the Kyushu rainy season.
