About Kochi

Kochi: Shikoku's Pacific-Facing Castle Town

Kochi sits on the southern coast of Shikoku, Japan's fourth-largest island, facing the Pacific Ocean across Tosa Bay. The city centres on Kochi Castle, one of only twelve original feudal castles surviving in Japan, completed in 1753 after a fire destroyed the first structure. The castle keep overlooks Kōtsūji-dōri, the main tram corridor, and the Hirome Ichiba covered market where vendors sell Katsuo no tataki — seared skipjack tuna, the dish most associated with Tosa cuisine.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels concentrate along Harimayabashi, the red-lacquered bridge that appears on Kochi's tourism materials, and near Kochi Station in the north of the city. The Tosaden tram network links the station to the castle district and the entertainment quarter of Obiyamachi on two intersecting lines — a flat-fare system at ¥200 per ride. Visitors arriving by air land at Kochi Ryoma Airport, 11 km east, with limousine buses reaching the city centre in roughly 35 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Best time to visit: August brings the Yosakoi Festival (10–12 August), when 200+ dance teams fill the streets; book accommodation several months ahead.
  • Day trips: Cape Muroto lies 90 km east; Shimanto River, Japan's last free-flowing major river, is 60 km west.
  • Currency: IC cards work on trams; rural areas remain largely cash-dependent.
  • Castle hours: Kochi Castle closes at 17:00; allow 90 minutes for the keep and grounds.
