About Vaduz
Vaduz: Capital of the Rhine Valley Principality
Vaduz sits on the western bank of the Rhine, roughly 120 km southeast of Zürich, serving as the capital of Liechtenstein — one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world. The city's most visible landmark is Vaduz Castle, a 12th-century fortress still occupied by the ruling Princely Family and visible from most points in town. The pedestrianised Städtle street forms the compact commercial core, lined with galleries, the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (opened 2000), and the Liechtenstein National Museum. Despite a resident population under 6,000, Vaduz functions as the country's banking and administrative centre.
Who Visits and Why
Visitors typically arrive for the novelty of a micro-state capital, passport stamping at the tourist office on Städtle 37, and access to the Princely Collections — one of the largest private art collections in Europe. Day-trippers from Zürich or Innsbruck account for the majority of foot traffic; overnight stays are less common, which keeps hotel supply limited.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Vaduz has no railway station; the nearest rail stop is Schaan-Vaduz on the Austrian network, a 15-minute walk from Städtle.
- Currency: Swiss franc (CHF) is the official currency despite Liechtenstein not being part of Switzerland.
- Timing: The National Day celebration on 15 August draws large crowds; book accommodation several weeks ahead.
- Border crossing: No passport control between Switzerland and Liechtenstein; standard Schengen rules apply from Austria.
