About Essaouira
Essaouira's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, sits within 500 metres of an Atlantic beach and suits walkers who want rampart views and artisan workshops in one compact area. The Medina quarter is ideal for mid-range riads; the Mellah offers quieter lanes; the port district suits seafood-focused stays. Marrakech is roughly 180 km east, about 2.5 hours by road.
Where to Stay
The Medina holds the majority of Essaouira's riads and small hotels, concentrated between Bab Doukkala and the Skala de la Ville sea ramparts. The walled streets are pedestrian-only, making this the most walkable base. The Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter north of the main souks, offers calmer alleys and slightly lower nightly rates than the medina core. The port district, on the southern edge near the working harbour, places guests within minutes of the daily fish auction and the grilled-sardine stalls along Avenue Moulay Hassan. Budget guesthouses cluster just outside Bab Marrakech on the eastern fringe of the walls.
Getting Around
Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) sits 15 km north and receives seasonal flights from several European cities. CTM and Supratours coaches connect to Marrakech (approximately 2.5 hours) and Agadir (around 3 hours). Shared grands taxis from Place Moulay Hassan cover nearby villages. Inside the medina, all movement is on foot.
Practical Tips
- Wind: The Alizé trade wind blows consistently June–August — ideal for kitesurfing at Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south, but the beach can be choppy for swimming.
- Pack layers: Evenings inside the medina are cool year-round; carry a light jacket even in July.
- Currency: Most medina stalls accept dirhams (MAD) only; the nearest ATMs are near Bab Doukkala.
- Gnawa Festival: The Gnawa and World Music Festival fills the ramparts and Place Moulay Hassan each June — book riads several months ahead during this period.
