Marrakech: Red City at the Gateway to the Atlas

Marrakech stands 470 km south of Casablanca at an elevation of 466 m, where the arid Haouz plain meets the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, the city takes its name from the Berber phrase meaning "Land of God." The Djemaa el-Fna square — a UNESCO-recognised cultural space since 2001 — anchors the Medina, a labyrinth of souks selling spices, leather, and hand-woven textiles within a 19 km² walled district. The Koutoubia Mosque, completed in 1158, rises 70 m and remains the city's tallest structure.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate in three distinct zones. The Medina holds the majority of riads — courtyard guesthouses converted from historic mansions — particularly around Derb Dabachi and Mouassine. Guéliz, the French-built Ville Nouvelle 2 km west of Djemaa el-Fna, offers modern hotels along Mohammed V Avenue. The Palmeraie district, 6 km north, is home to resort properties with pool complexes.

Practical Tips

• Getting around: Petit taxis charge metered fares; agree on a price before entering for Palmeraie trips.
• Best months: March–May and September–November bring temperatures between 20–28 °C.
• Airport transfer: Marrakech Menara Airport sits 6 km southwest of the Medina; bus line 19 runs every 30 minutes.
• Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD); card acceptance is limited in souks.
