About Taroudant
Taroudant: Walled City of the Souss Valley
Taroudant sits in the Souss Valley at the foot of the High Atlas mountains, roughly 80 km east of Agadir. Its ochre-red ramparts — built under the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century — encircle a medina that remains largely intact and free of mass tourism. The walled city served as the first Saadian capital before power shifted to Marrakech, and that history shows in its architecture: tanneries, souks, and riads clustered around two main squares, Place Assarag and Place Talmoktar.
Visitors come for a slower, more residential version of a Moroccan medina experience. The souks here trade in argan oil, saffron, and silver Berber jewelry — all produced in the surrounding Souss-Massa region. Walkers and cyclists navigate the full 7.5 km circuit of the city walls in a few hours. Birdwatchers use Taroudant as a base for Souss-Massa National Park, about 65 km to the west, home to the critically endangered northern bald ibis.
The city is accessible by CTM and Supratours buses from Agadir (roughly 2 hours) and by grand taxi from the same hub. Most hotels and riads cluster inside the medina walls or just outside the Bab Zorgane gate. Temperatures in July and August regularly exceed 40 °C — spring and autumn are the practical travel windows.
