About St Kitts
St Kitts: Basseterre, Brimstone Hill & the Southeast Peninsula
St Kitts, the larger of the two-island federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, sits at the northern end of the Leeward Islands, roughly 2,100 km southeast of Miami. The island stretches 35 km long and is dominated by Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano rising to 1,156 m. The capital, Basseterre, clusters around The Circus — a Georgian roundabout modeled on London's Piccadilly Circus — and retains 18th-century plantation-era architecture along its waterfront. Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1790, stands 240 m above the western coast and draws history-focused visitors from across the Caribbean.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in two zones: the Frigate Bay strip, 3 km east of Basseterre, which holds mid-range resorts and beach bars along the Atlantic and Caribbean shores; and the Southeast Peninsula, accessible via a causeway, where larger all-inclusive properties face calm turquoise waters. A smaller cluster of guesthouses operates within walking distance of Basseterre Port, useful for cruise passengers on overnight stops.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Taxis and minibuses run between Basseterre and Frigate Bay; no public transport reaches the Southeast Peninsula.
- Best months: December to April brings the driest weather; hurricane season runs June to November.
- Currency: Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD); USD widely accepted at hotels.
- Airport: Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport is 3 km northeast of Basseterre.
