About Bequia
Bequia: Admiralty Bay and the Grenadines' Seafaring Heritage
Bequia is the largest of the Grenadines islands south of St. Vincent, covering roughly 18 km² and home to about 5,000 residents. The island earned international notice for its centuries-old hand-harpoon whaling tradition, still practiced under an IWC Aboriginal Subsistence quota of four humpbacks per year. Port Elizabeth, the main settlement, wraps around Admiralty Bay — one of the Eastern Caribbean's most sheltered deep-water anchorages, drawing bareboat and crewed charter yachts from October through April.
Where to Stay in Bequia
Most hotels and guesthouses cluster on the hillsides above Belmont Walkway or within a short walk of Princess Margaret Beach, a 400 m arc of calm water 1 km south of Port Elizabeth. A smaller concentration sits near Lower Bay, favored by travelers wanting quieter evenings away from the dinghy dock bars. Properties range from owner-run guesthouses to boutique hillside inns; large all-inclusive resorts are absent from the island entirely.
