About Jeddah
Jeddah: Red Sea Gateway and Historic Trading Port
Jeddah sits on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, 80 km west of Mecca — a position that shaped the city for more than 1,400 years as the principal entry point for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. The Al-Balad district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, preserves coral-stone merchant houses with intricately carved Rawasheen wooden screens dating to the 19th century. The King Fahd Fountain, which jets water 312 metres into the air, remains one of the tallest fountains in the world and is visible from the Corniche, a 30 km waterfront promenade along the Red Sea.
Where to Stay in Jeddah
Most hotels cluster along the Al-Corniche Road in the Al-Shati district, offering sea views and proximity to Red Sea Mall and Mall of Arabia. Business travelers favour the Al-Hamra and Al-Andalus districts for access to the city's financial and trade offices. The Al-Balad neighbourhood offers boutique guesthouses inside restored heritage buildings.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) are the primary transport; King Abdulaziz International Airport opened its new terminal in 2018, 30 km north of the city centre.
- Climate: Summers exceed 40 °C; November through March is the most comfortable period for sightseeing.
- Dress code: Modest dress is expected in public areas, particularly in Al-Balad and near religious sites.
