Subotica: Art Nouveau Capital of the Serbian North

Subotica sits 10 km south of the Hungarian border in the Vojvodina region of northern Serbia, making it the northernmost major city in the country. The city is home to some of the most concentrated Art Nouveau architecture in the western Balkans — the Subotica Synagogue (1902) and the ornate City Hall (1910) both designed by architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab stand as centrepieces of the pedestrian core. Three official languages — Serbian, Hungarian, and Croatian — reflect a multicultural heritage shaped by centuries of Ottoman, Habsburg, and Yugoslav rule.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels cluster around Trg slobode (Freedom Square) and along Korzo, the main pedestrian street. Palić Lake, 8 km east of the city centre, offers resort-style accommodation alongside a protected natural park. Most hotels are small, independently run properties; international chains have no presence here. The railway station, a 1902 Art Nouveau landmark itself, connects Subotica to Belgrade (3 hours by intercity train) and to Novi Sad (1.5 hours).
