About Nuku‘alofa
Nuku'alofa: Capital of the Last Polynesian Kingdom
Nuku'alofa sits on the northern coast of Tongatapu, Tonga's main island, roughly 2,000 km northeast of Auckland. As the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga — the only Pacific nation never colonised — it carries a distinct ceremonial weight. The Royal Palace, a white timber structure built in 1867, stands at the waterfront alongside the Royal Tombs at Mala'e Kula, where Tongan monarchs have been interred since the 19th century. The central market on Salote Road sells tapa cloth, woven baskets, and fresh produce most mornings.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along the waterfront strip and in the Fasi-moe-Afi and Kolofo'ou districts, within walking distance of the harbour ferry terminals. Properties range from small guesthouses to mid-range hotels with pools. Most visitors use Nuku'alofa as a base for day trips to the Mapu'a 'a Vaea Blowholes on Tongatapu's southern coast, or for ferry connections to the Ha'apai and Vava'u island groups.
