About Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Cappadocia, carved deep into the volcanic rock of central Turkey. Stretching approximately 85 meters below ground, this ancient subterranean complex could shelter thousands of people and remains one of the largest underground cities ever discovered.

History and Origins

Derinkuyu is believed to have been first carved during the Phrygian period, around the 8th to 7th centuries BCE, with significant expansion during the Byzantine era. Early Christian communities used the city as a refuge from Arab raids between the 8th and 10th centuries CE. The site was rediscovered in 1963 and opened to visitors shortly after. Its name translates roughly to "deep well" in Turkish, a reference to the ancient wells that supplied water to its inhabitants.

What to See Inside

Visitors can explore eight of the city's estimated eighteen levels, descending through a network of tunnels, rooms, and communal spaces. Key features include stables, wine and oil presses, storage rooms, chapels, and a large meeting hall. Massive circular stone doors, weighing hundreds of kilograms each, could be rolled into place to seal off sections of the city from the inside. Ventilation shafts running through all levels kept the air breathable even at the deepest points.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes — tunnels are narrow and uneven.
  • The temperature underground stays around 13°C (55°F) year-round; bring a light layer.
  • Visit early in the morning to avoid the largest tour groups.
  • The site is located in the town of Derinkuyu, about 30 km south of Göreme, easily reached by car or organized tour.
  • Photography is permitted throughout most of the site.
