Trabzon sits on Turkey's Black Sea coast, roughly 100 km from the Georgian border, and has served as a trading hub since its founding as the Greek colony Trapezus around 756 BC. The city rose to regional dominance as the capital of the Empire of Trebizond (1204–1461), a Byzantine successor state whose legacy survives in the Hagia Sophia of Trabzon — a 13th-century church now operating as a mosque, decorated with rare medieval frescoes. The surrounding Kaçkar Mountains rise sharply behind the coast, giving the city a compressed, layered geography that shapes both its climate and its character.

Visitors come for several distinct reasons. History travelers focus on the Hagia Sophia, the Atatürk Köşkü villa (a clifftop mansion used by Atatürk in 1924, 1930, and 1937), and the ruins of Trabzon Castle. Nature-oriented travelers use the city as a base for the Altındere Valley National Park and the Sümela Monastery — a 4th-century cliff-face monastery carved into rock at 1,200 m elevation, about 46 km south of the city center. Football fans travel specifically to see Trabzonspor, one of Turkey's major clubs, at the Papara Park stadium.

Trabzon's climate is temperate and wet — annual rainfall exceeds 800 mm — so the region stays green year-round. The city is served by Trabzon Airport (TZX), located approximately 6 km east of the city center, with direct flights to Istanbul, Ankara, and several European destinations.
