About Annapolis

Annapolis: Maryland's Colonial Capital on the Chesapeake

Annapolis sits at the mouth of the Severn River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay, 32 miles east of Washington D.C. and 30 miles south of Baltimore. Founded in 1649, it served as the United States capital from November 1783 to August 1784 — the period when the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris at the Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use. That domed brick landmark anchors the Historic District, where more than 1,500 18th-century structures line streets like Maryland Avenue and Main Street.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster within walking distance of City Dock, the waterfront hub where skipjack boats and sailing schools share space with oyster bars. The United States Naval Academy, established here in 1845, draws families of midshipmen and history travelers year-round. Summer brings racing crews and sailing enthusiasts; autumn draws visitors for the U.S. Sailboat Show held every October at City Dock — the largest in-water sailboat show in the world.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Amtrak does not serve Annapolis directly; the nearest station is BWI Rail, 20 miles west, with connecting bus service.
  • Parking: Garage parking on Gott's Court costs roughly $2/hour; street meters are limited to 2 hours in the Historic District.
  • Weather: July and August average 87°F (31°C) with high humidity; pack a light layer for bay evenings in spring and fall.
