About Carmel
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Monterey Peninsula's Arts Village
Carmel-by-the-Sea sits on the northern edge of Big Sur, 120 miles south of San Francisco on California's Monterey Peninsula. The city was incorporated in 1916 and has no street addresses — mail is collected at the post office, a quirk that has persisted for over a century. The Carmel Beach stretches a mile of white sand at the foot of Ocean Avenue, backed by Monterey cypress trees. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, one mile south, protects sea otters, harbor seals, and rocky coves.
Where to Stay
Hotels and inns cluster along Ocean Avenue and the residential blocks between 5th and 13th streets. Properties range from small European-style inns near Carmel Plaza to larger resorts on the Carmel Valley Road corridor, seven miles inland. The Carmel Highlands area, four miles south on Highway 1, offers clifftop lodging above the Pacific. The city draws artists, photographers, and wine tourists accessing the Carmel Valley AVA, which has over 20 tasting rooms within a 20-mile radius.
