About Mystic
Mystic: Connecticut's Maritime Village on the Mystic River
Mystic, Connecticut sits at the mouth of the Mystic River in southeastern Connecticut, roughly 55 miles east of New Haven and 10 miles west of the Rhode Island border. The town built its reputation on 19th-century shipbuilding — at its peak in the 1850s, local yards launched some of the fastest wooden ships in American trade. That heritage survives intact at Mystic Seaport Museum, a 19-acre living history site on the riverbank housing the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in existence.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along U.S. Route 1 and near Interstate 95 Exit 90, within walking distance of Olde Mistick Village shops and a short drive to the waterfront. Downtown Mystic — centered on the Bascule Drawbridge at West Main Street — draws visitors who prefer walkable access to independent restaurants and the Mystic River waterfront boardwalk. Mystic Aquarium, home to beluga whales, sits less than a mile north of the downtown core.
