About Nantucket
Nantucket: Cobblestone Whaling Capital 30 Miles Offshore
Nantucket sits 30 miles south of Cape Cod in the Atlantic Ocean, accessible only by ferry or small aircraft. The island built its identity on 18th-century whale oil wealth — at its peak in the 1840s, Nantucket-based ships dominated the global sperm whale industry. That prosperity left behind a remarkably intact streetscape: over 800 pre-1850 structures along Main Street and Centre Street, more than any comparably sized American town. The Nantucket Historic District covers virtually the entire downtown core.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and inns cluster within walking distance of Straight Wharf and the Old South Wharf, where seasonal restaurants and galleries occupy former fishing shacks. Siasconset (locally called 'Sconset), 8 miles east, offers quieter rose-covered cottages near Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Properties fill quickly from late June through Labor Day; shoulder months of May and September offer lower rates and fewer crowds.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises run ferries from Hyannis; fast ferry takes about 1 hour.
- Getting around: Rent a bicycle — the island has dedicated paths to most beaches including Surfside and Madaket.
- Season: Book accommodations for July and August at least 3 months ahead.
- Currency: USD; no international customs required for domestic travelers.
