About Trinidad

Trinidad: California's Smallest Incorporated City on the Humboldt Coast

Trinidad occupies a rocky headland in Humboldt County, California, roughly 25 miles north of Eureka and 22 miles south of Orick. With a permanent population under 400, it ranks among the smallest incorporated cities in the state. Trinidad Head rises 362 feet above the Pacific and shelters a natural harbor where fishing boats target salmon, Dungeness crab, and rockfish year-round. The lighthouse at the base of the Head dates to 1871 and remains an active aid to navigation.

Where to Stay and What Surrounds the Town

Accommodation in Trinidad runs to bed-and-breakfasts, vacation rentals, and small inns along Patrick's Point Drive and near Trinidad State Beach. Patrick's Point State Park, 5 miles north, contains tide pools, Sumêg Village — a reconstructed Yurok cultural site — and 2 miles of coastal trail. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, roughly 35 miles north on US-101, puts old-growth groves within a short drive.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: US-101 passes directly through town; Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) sits 20 miles south.
  • Weather: June through September is driest; coastal fog is frequent from May through early summer.
  • Cell service: Coverage is limited in and around Trinidad — download offline maps before arriving.
  • Parking: The harbor lot fills on summer weekends; arrive before 9 a.m. for a spot.
