About Medersa Ben Youssef
La Medersa Ben Youssef est une ancienne école coranique située au cœur de la médina de Marrakech. Fondée au XIVe siècle sous la dynastie mérinide, elle fut entièrement reconstruite au XVIe siècle et constitue aujourd'hui l'un des plus beaux exemples de l'architecture saadienne au Maroc.
Son décor intérieur est d'une rare finesse : bois de cèdre sculpté, stucs ciselés et zelliges colorés habillent la cour centrale et les cellules où logeaient autrefois les étudiants. Au plus fort de son activité, la medersa pouvait accueillir jusqu'à 900 élèves venus y étudier le Coran.
Fermée en 1960, elle a depuis été reconvertie en site historique ouvert au public. Elle se trouve à proximité immédiate de la mosquée Ben Youssef, à environ quinze minutes à pied de la place Jemaa el-Fna.
