About Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport
Mazar-i-Sharif: Gateway to Northern Afghanistan
Mazar-i-Sharif, capital of Balkh Province, sits in northern Afghanistan roughly 55 km south of the Uzbekistan border. The city's defining landmark is the Shrine of Hazrat Ali (Rawza-e-Sharif), a 15th-century mosque whose turquoise-and-white tiled domes draw pilgrims from across Central Asia. The surrounding bazaars trade in karakul fur hats and hand-knotted carpets produced in the Andkhoy and Kunduz regions. Each year on 21 March, thousands gather at the shrine grounds for Nawruz (Persian New Year), one of the largest public gatherings in Afghan civic life.
Getting Around
Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport (MZR) sits approximately 9 km northwest of the shrine district. Shared taxis and auto-rickshaws connect the terminal to central hotels. The old-town bazaar and shrine complex are within walking distance of one another once in the city center. Balkh, the ancient city sometimes called the "Mother of Cities," lies 20 km to the west and is reachable by taxi in under 30 minutes.
