Vlora (also spelled Vlorë) sits at the mouth of the Bay of Vlorë in southwestern Albania, 170 km south of Tirana where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea. On 28 November 1912, Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag here, making Vlora the birthplace of Albanian independence. The Independence Monument on Flamurit Hill and the Independence Museum on Rr. The city center clusters around Sheshi i Flamurit (Flag Square), walkable from most hotels. Ferries to Corfu depart from Vlora Port in roughly 2 hours.
