About Puerto Iguazú
Puerto Iguazú: Gateway to the Falls on Three Borders
Puerto Iguazú sits at the northeastern tip of Misiones Province, Argentina, where the Iguazú and Paraná rivers converge at the Triple Frontier with Brazil and Paraguay. The town's primary draw is Iguazú National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site declared in 1984, which protects 275 individual waterfalls spread across nearly 3 km of the Iguazú River. The Argentine side offers closer access to the falls via elevated walkways, including the dramatic Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) viewpoint — a 150-metre-wide horseshoe cascade. The surrounding Atlantic Forest harbors coatis, toucans, and over 400 bird species.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Avenida Tres Fronteras and the residential streets between the town center and the park entrance, roughly 18 km apart. Budget guesthouses concentrate near the Terminal de Ómnibus on Calle Córdoba, while mid-range and upscale properties line the road toward the park. The Sheraton Iguazú Resort sits inside the national park boundary itself, offering direct falls views.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport (IGR) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires (1 hr 50 min).
- Park entry: Purchase tickets online in advance; the Argentine park entrance fee is separate from the Brazilian side.
- Currency: Pay park fees and restaurants in Argentine pesos; some businesses accept Brazilian reais near the Triple Frontier.
- Season: April–June offers lower crowds and stable water volume after the wet season peaks.
