About Brisbane

Brisbane: Queensland's River City Between Coast and Hinterland

Brisbane sits on the Brisbane River in southeast Queensland, roughly 80 km north of the Gold Coast and 100 km south of the Sunshine Coast. The city hosted the 1988 World Expo on the South Bank precinct, which today holds the Queensland Cultural Centre — including the Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, and Goma (Gallery of Modern Art), one of the largest modern art galleries in the Asia-Pacific region. The South Bank Parklands stretch 17 hectares along the river's south bank, including a public beach with filtered river water.

Where to Stay in Brisbane

Most hotels cluster in the CBD, Fortitude Valley, and South Brisbane. The CBD sits on the river's north side, walkable to Central Station and Queen Street Mall. Fortitude Valley, 1 km northeast of the CBD, concentrates live music venues, restaurants, and boutique accommodation. South Brisbane and West End attract visitors who want proximity to the Cultural Centre and the Kurilpa Bridge pedestrian crossing.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Translink's go card covers buses, trains, and CityCat ferries across the network.
  • Climate: Subtropical — summers (December–February) are humid with afternoon storms; winters are mild, averaging 21°C.
  • Airport access: Brisbane Airport is 16 km northeast of the CBD; the Airtrain runs every 15–30 minutes and reaches Central Station in about 20 minutes.
  • Brisbane 2032: The city will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032, with major infrastructure upgrades already underway.
