About Daintree

Daintree: Rainforest Village at the Edge of the Coral Sea

Daintree sits roughly 100 km north of Cairns in Far North Queensland, where the Daintree Rainforest — the world's oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest at an estimated 135 million years old — meets the Great Barrier Reef coast. The village itself has fewer than 100 permanent residents, yet it anchors one of Australia's most ecologically significant landscapes. The Daintree River runs immediately south of the settlement, and the only way to cross it toward Cape Tribulation is a small cable ferry that operates daily.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation clusters in two zones: around Daintree Village on the southern riverbank, and further north in the Cape Tribulation area beyond the ferry crossing. Lodges, eco-retreats, and rainforest bungalows dominate the supply — chain hotels are absent here. The Mossman Gorge day-trip is 25 km south. Roads north of the ferry are unsealed in sections; a 4WD is advisable during the wet season (November–April).

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Drive 2.5 hours north from Cairns via the Captain Cook Highway; no public bus runs to the village itself.
  • Wildlife: Cassowaries cross roads frequently — slow to 25 km/h in marked zones.
  • Wet season: Heavy rain closes some tracks between January and March; confirm access before departure.
  • Ferry hours: The Daintree River cable ferry runs approximately 6 am–midnight; no bridge exists.
