About Whitsundays

Whitsundays: 74 Islands Between the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef

The Whitsundays sit midway along the Queensland coast, roughly 1,100 km north of Brisbane and 630 km south of Cairns. The archipelago comprises 74 islands, most of them uninhabited national park, flanking the Coral Sea at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Airlie Beach, the mainland gateway town, connects ferry and charter services to the outer islands. Hamilton Island operates its own commercial airport (HTI) with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, making it the most accessible island base.

Where to Stay

Accommodation spreads across three main nodes. Airlie Beach offers budget hostels and mid-range hotels along the Shute Harbour Road strip. Hamilton Island holds the range from self-contained villas to the adults-only qualia resort on the island's north point. Hayman Island, 8 km north of Hamilton, hosts a single high-end property. Demand peaks June through August — Queensland's dry season — when southeast trade winds keep humidity low and water visibility on the reef reaches 20 metres or more.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Fly into Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) or Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP), then connect by ferry or water taxi.
  • Reef access: Day-cruise departures to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet leave from both Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island marinas each morning.
  • Season: June–August brings dry, mild conditions; November–April is cyclone season with higher rainfall.
