About Bridgetown

Bridgetown: Coral Stone Capital of the Eastern Caribbean

Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, sits on the southwest coast of the island, roughly 13 km from Grantley Adams International Airport. Founded in 1628, it is one of the oldest European settlements in the Caribbean and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 — the only such listing in Barbados. The historic core, known as the Garrison Historic Area, contains 18th-century British military architecture including the Main Guard and a parade ground that hosted the first recorded horse racing in the western hemisphere.

Where to Stay in Bridgetown

Most hotels cluster along Bay Street and the Carlisle Bay waterfront, putting guests within walking distance of Broad Street shopping and the Parliament Buildings (circa 1874). The Careenage, a small inner harbour, divides the city and is lined with rum shops and seafood restaurants. The southern hotel corridor extends toward St. Lawrence Gap, Barbados's main nightlife strip, about 8 km from the city centre.

Practical Tips

  • Climate: Dry season runs December through May — the most popular booking window.
  • Transport: Route taxis (minibuses) run frequently along the south and west coasts for under 2 BBD per trip.
