About Placencia

Placencia: Caribbean Peninsula at Belize's Southern Tip

Placencia sits at the end of a 35 km peninsula in Stann Creek District, southern Belize, flanked by the Caribbean Sea to the east and a lagoon to the west. The village gained a Guinness record for the world's narrowest main street — a 1.2-metre-wide sidewalk running the spine of the village. Laughing Bird Caye National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 18 km offshore, draws snorkelers and divers to patch reefs and nurse shark nurseries. The Belize Barrier Reef, second-largest in the world, runs parallel to the peninsula and is reachable by boat in under 30 minutes from the main dock.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters in three zones: the village itself, Seine Bight (a Garifuna community 8 km north), and the northern peninsula near Maya Beach. Beachfront cabanas dominate the village end; larger resorts and private rentals sit along the quieter northern stretch. Most properties are small-scale; the peninsula has no high-rise development.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly from Belize City (Philip Goldson International) in roughly 25 minutes; the Southern Highway bus route takes 3–4 hours.
  • Best season: February–May for driest weather; September–October is peak hurricane season.
  • Water taxi: Connects Placencia to Dangriga and Hopkins for day trips along the coast.
