Cotonou: Benin's Atlantic Trade Capital

Cotonou is Benin's largest city and economic hub, sitting on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Nokoué. Though Cotonou is not the official capital — that role belongs to Porto-Novo, 30 km to the east — it holds the country's main port, Port Autonome de Cotonou, and the international airport, Cadjehoun Airport, making it the practical gateway to West Africa's Vodoun heartland.

The city draws traders, NGO workers, and cultural travelers. The Dantokpa Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa, spreads across the northern bank of the Cotonou lagoon and sells everything from textiles to traditional medicines. The Fondation Zinsou, a contemporary African art museum on Rue du Gouverneur Bayol, runs rotating exhibitions of Beninese and pan-African artists. Zémidjan motorcycle-taxis — numbering in the tens of thousands — are the dominant urban transport; shared minibuses called zem and taxi-brousse connect Cotonou to Abomey (120 km north), the seat of the historic Dahomey kingdom.
