About Thimphu
Thimphu: Bhutan's Capital at 2,334 Metres
Thimphu sits in a valley carved by the Wang Chhu river at 2,334 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest capital cities in Asia. Founded as the permanent capital in 1961 under King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the city holds fewer than 200,000 residents yet functions as Bhutan's political, cultural, and commercial centre. The Tashichho Dzong, a fortress-monastery rebuilt in 1962, anchors the northern end of the city and houses the throne room and government ministries. The National Memorial Chorten, completed in 1974 in honour of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, draws worshippers who circle it daily at dawn.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster along Norzin Lam, the main commercial street, and on the hillside above Chang Lam. Mid-range properties sit within walking distance of the Weekend Market near the Centenary Farmers Market, where traders sell dried chilies, yak cheese, and handwoven textiles. Higher-end lodges occupy quieter slopes north toward Dechencholing. Altitude affects all new arrivals — most hotels advise a rest day before any uphill excursions to the Buddha Dordenma statue at Kuensel Phodrang, which stands 51.5 metres tall.
Practical Tips
- Entry permit: All visitors except Indian nationals require a Bhutan Development Contribution fee ($100/night as of 2024) paid through a licensed tour operator before arrival.
- Currency: The ngultrum (BTN) is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee; ATMs on Norzin Lam accept Visa and Mastercard.
- Altitude: Pack layers — temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer months.
