About Maun
Maun: Gateway to the Okavango Delta
Maun sits at the southern edge of the Okavango Delta in northwest Botswana, roughly 900 km from Gaborone. The town of around 60,000 residents serves as the primary staging point for mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, fly-in safaris, and overland expeditions into one of Africa's largest inland water systems — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. The Thamalakane River runs through town, drawing hippos and crocodiles close to lodges along its banks.
Where to Stay in Maun
Most hotels and guesthouses cluster along the Shorobe Road corridor and near Maun Airport (MUB), one of the busiest light-aircraft hubs in southern Africa. Budget travellers find campsites and self-catering chalets; mid-range and upper-tier properties offer airstrip transfers and guided delta day trips. The Ngami district holds older guesthouses; newer lodges line the river east toward Matlapana.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Maun Airport receives daily flights from Johannesburg (approx. 2 hrs) and Gaborone (1 hr).
- Season: May–October is dry season — lower water but easier wildlife sightings on land. Peak flood waters peak around June–July.
- Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP); ATMs available on Tsheko Tsheko Road.
- Health: Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the delta region year-round.
