About Florianópolis
Centro is the most convenient base, walkable to the 1926 Hercílio Luz Bridge and ferry terminals; Lagoa da Conceição suits surfers and those seeking lakeside nightlife; Jurerê Internacional draws upscale beach visitors to the north island; and Campeche offers quieter surf breaks on the south coast. Most visitors stay five to seven nights. Hercílio Luz International Airport sits 12 km south of Centro.
Where to Stay in Each Neighborhood
Centro occupies the island's western edge, close to the public market (Mercado Público, built 1851), ferry services to the mainland, and budget-to-midrange hotels. Lagoa da Conceição, 12 km east of Centro, sits between a saltwater lagoon and Atlantic dunes — the area concentrates surf schools, bars, and guesthouses popular with Argentine and São Paulo visitors. Jurerê Internacional, 30 km north, is a planned resort district with wide avenues, beach clubs, and 4-star properties. Campeche, on the south island, draws longboard surfers and travelers who prefer low-rise pousadas over resort infrastructure.
Getting Around
Florianópolis has no metro. Local buses connect Centro to most beach districts, though journey times range from 30 minutes to Lagoa da Conceição to 70 minutes to Praia dos Ingleses in high season. Renting a car or using ride-apps shortens trips considerably. The two road bridges — Colombo Salles and Pedro Ivo Campos — link the island to the mainland city of São José.
Practical Tips
- Best season: December to March brings warm water (25 °C) and crowds; April to June offers calmer conditions and lower rates.
- Airport transfer: Taxis from Hercílio Luz International Airport to Centro take 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
- Currency: BRL is standard; card acceptance is wide in Jurerê and Lagoa but limited at smaller south-island pousadas.
- Language: Portuguese is universal; English is common in surf and resort areas.
