About Sao Paulo
São Paulo: South America's Largest Metropolis
São Paulo sits on a plateau 760 metres above sea level, roughly 70 km inland from the Atlantic coast. Founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1554, the city grew into Brazil's financial and cultural engine — home to over 12 million residents in the municipality and nearly 22 million across Greater São Paulo. The Paulista Avenue corridor anchors the commercial centre, while Vila Madalena draws gallery-hoppers and the weekend street-art scene around Beco do Batman. The Liberdade neighbourhood, south of the city centre, holds the largest Japanese diaspora community outside Japan, concentrated around Rua Galvão Bueno.
Where to Stay in São Paulo
Hotels cluster in three main zones: Jardins, a tree-lined district east of Paulista with upscale boutique properties; Consolação/República, closer to the historic centre and Teatro Municipal (1911); and Itaim Bibi, preferred by business travellers near the financial district. The Pinacoteca do Estado, Brazil's oldest fine-arts museum, is a 10-minute metro ride from most Jardins hotels via Line 2.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The metro covers six lines; a single trip costs R$5 (2024 fare). Avoid road travel during peak hours (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00).
- Climate: Rain peaks October–March. Pack a compact umbrella year-round.
- Currency: ATMs are widely available; notify banks before arrival to avoid card blocks.
- Airport: Guarulhos International (GRU) sits 25 km northeast; allow 45–90 minutes to reach central hotels depending on traffic.
