About Monte Verde
Monte Verde: Mountain Village in the Serra da Mantiqueira
Monte Verde sits at 1,800 metres above sea level in the Serra da Mantiqueira, within the municipality of Camanducaia in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. The village is roughly 180 km northeast of São Paulo and 320 km south of Belo Horizonte, making it a frequent weekend escape for urban travellers from both cities. Settled largely by German immigrants in the early 20th century, the district retains a distinct alpine character — stone-and-timber architecture lines Rua dos Lírios, the main commercial street, where artisan cheese shops, chocolate ateliers, and fondue restaurants operate year-round.
Where to Stay
Hotels and pousadas concentrate along Rua dos Lírios and the quieter Rua das Orquídeas, ranging from simple rooms to chalet-style properties with fireplaces. Cooler months (June–August) see the heaviest demand; temperatures can drop below 5 °C overnight, filling every hotel in the village.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Take the BR-459 from São Paulo via Campos do Jordão or the direct route through Camanducaia town, roughly 3 hours by car.
- Weather: Pack warm layers even in summer — evenings at 1,800 m are cool regardless of season.
- Trails: The Pedra do Baú circuit and the Trilha das Pedras Brancas begin within 2 km of the village centre.
- Book ahead: June and July long weekends sell out weeks in advance.
