About Pirangi do Norte

Pirangi do Norte: Cashew Tree Capital of the Brazilian Northeast

Pirangi do Norte sits on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, roughly 12 km south of Natal along the RN-063 highway. The town is anchored by the Cajueiro de Pirangi, a single cashew tree covering approximately 8,500 square meters — certified by the Guinness World Records as the largest cashew tree on Earth. Planted around 1888, it shades an entire park and draws visitors from across Brazil year-round. The Pirangi Beach waterfront features natural tidal pools formed by offshore reefs, calm enough for swimming at low tide.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodations cluster near Praia de Pirangi and the marina, ranging from small pousadas to mid-range beach hotels. The Marina Badauê, one of the largest private marinas in northeastern Brazil, operates day trips to nearby reefs and sandbars. Visitors arriving at Natal Governador Aluízio Alves International Airport can reach Pirangi do Norte in about 35 minutes by taxi or app-based ride.

Practical Tips

  • Best time to visit: July–February for calmer seas and lower rainfall.
  • Tidal pools: Check local tide tables before heading to the reefs — pools are only accessible at low tide.
  • Currency: Carry Brazilian reais; smaller pousadas and beachfront stalls rarely accept cards.
  • Getting around locally: Mototaxis are the standard short-distance option within the village.
