Trancoso sits on the southern Bahia coast, roughly 25 km south of Porto Seguro, where Cabrália Bay meets the Mata Atlântica forest. The town's center, the Quadrado — a grass-carpeted square lined with painted colonial houses and the 16th-century Igreja de São João Batista — draws architects, designers, and repeat visitors who return for the unhurried pace. Founded in 1586 as a Jesuit mission, Trancoso remained isolated until the 1970s, when artists and backpackers arrived via unmarked dirt roads. That selective access shaped a town where boutique pousadas outnumber chain hotels and the nightlife centers on candlelit restaurant verandas rather than clubs.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters in three zones: Quadrado-side pousadas steps from the church square; Praia dos Nativos properties along the 4-km beach reached by a clifftop path; and scattered jungle villas in the forest fringe west of the BR-367. High season runs December through Carnival, when prices rise sharply. The shoulder months of October and November offer the same clear water with fewer visitors.
