About Bujumbura
Bujumbura: Lake Tanganyika's Lakeside Capital
Bujumbura, Burundi's economic and administrative capital, sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second-deepest lake at 1,470 metres. The city of roughly 1 million people occupies a narrow coastal plain backed by the Mumirwa escarpment, giving the skyline a dramatic vertical contrast. The Avenue du Large waterfront and the sandy beaches of Saga Beach and Plage des Cocotiers draw visitors year-round, while the central Marché de Bujumbura offers fresh produce, textiles, and crafts under one roof.
Where to Stay in Bujumbura
Most hotels cluster around the Centre-ville grid near Boulevard du 28 Novembre and the Quartier Asiatique, placing guests within walking distance of the lake and government ministries. The Rohero neighbourhood hosts several mid-range guesthouses; the Kiriri hillside district above the city offers cooler temperatures and views over the lake toward Democratic Republic of Congo on the opposite shore, roughly 35 km across.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) is 11 km north of the city centre; shared taxis take about 20 minutes.
- Currency: Burundian franc (BIF); USD accepted at larger hotels.
- Climate: Dry seasons run June–August and December–January — the most comfortable months for lakeside activities.
- Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry; malaria prophylaxis is strongly advised.
